Signs of Low Protein

While incredibly rare in healthy adults, it is possible to suffer from protein deficiency. Perhaps the result of a lifestyle choice, low protein levels manifest in noticeable ways. Many vegetarians and vegans, who do not consume enough (or any) animal proteins, may want to look out for the following symptoms.

Fatigue

The most obvious symptom of low blood protein is fatigue. If you find yourself yawning, constantly lethargic or unable to perform functions, you may be suffering from fatigue. Caffeine and other stimulants may not help you feel "awake."

Decreased Muscle Mass

If your appearance has become increasingly gaunt or even "pudgy," you may be experiencing a decrease in muscle mass. Just as bodybuilders may overload on protein to get an increasingly muscular physique, if you are lacking protein, muscle definition will decrease. This may be the most evident in larger muscle groups, like the glutes or quads.

Slow Wound Healing

Have a cut that just won't heal? That may be a sign of a protein deficiency. Collagen, a key protein in keeping skin healthy and resilient, may be lacking, leaving a wound more susceptible to slower healing.

Fluid collection

Also known as edema, fluid can collect in the extremities and in the body cavity itself, leading to swelling. A protein deficiency allows cell walls to deteriorate and plasma to leak out of the cells. Edema can mask weight loss that may otherwise come from a protein deficiency.

Remedies

Relatively minor protein deficiencies may be cured with changes in diet--by adding more meat, animal proteins, soy or legumes. For more involved cases, see a physician. She may be able to offer a number of medicines to expedite healing.
